The car
A 2003 Ariel Atom with a Honda k20 engine
The brief
The customer required front and rear wings fitted to the car adding downforce and adding to the car's aesthetics. The rear wing overhang had to be minimal and the front wing to not be too close to the ground so the car could be used on the road without fear of fouling. Functioning tow straps to be added front and rear. The brackets had to look 'clean' and flow with the general appearance of the car.
What was done
Bodywork was removed and possible mounting pounts were evaluated for strength and ease of removal of the front wing. Steel frame fabricated utilising already existing chassis pickup points. Reinforcing plate added to this frame for the front tow strap to be attached securely. Bodywork lightly modified to allow the wing to be as high off the ground as the chassis would allow, without comprising aero efficiency or the asthetics.
The numberplate assembly removed to allow marking and preparation of chassis for mounting tabs to be welded. Prototyping of rear wing stanchons plates from 6082 structural grade aluminium, finalising in the current design type. Existing chassis pickup point used to brace rear stanchons with steel support as was rear tow strap.
All metal work dressed prior to exterior grade satin black powder coating. Car rebuilt using new fasteners and correct mounting hardware, using a digital flat patch to ensure accuracy.
The results
The front brackets are invisible with the nose cone on and the front wing hangs 80mm off the ground giving good clearance while retaining the desired look. The steal construction of the front brackets are very strong and are more than able to cope with the weight of the wing and forces exerted whilst driving. The rear brackets fit seamlessly to the car and are not obtrusive at all, the black powder coating adds to the clean design. The use of aluminium helps reduce the weight impact of the rear wing brackets.
